Description

Hardly any other artist is as closely related to American Pop Art as Andy Warhol. He adopted the visual language of mass culture as well as its techniques. Using motifs of brand-name products and celebrities, he created modern art icons and became a star himself. Warhol was fascinated by the media’s staging of identity and personality. He embraced it and experimented with it. In the current collection presentation, we encounter celebrities such as Marilyn and Elvis, but also drag queens, who impressed Warhol, as well as Beuys and Warhol himself. In serial silkscreen prints based on press photos, film motifs and polaroid, he alienated and played with the media images.

But artworks themselves can also become stars. At the end of the tour we deal with gestures of appropriation of iconic works, as they are made visible in this collection presentation based on works by Louise Lawler and Sturtevant, for example.

Themed tours at Museum Brandhorst invite visitors to explore together particular aspects of our exhibitions or individual artistic practice. They provide an inspiring start to every Thursday evening and enable exchange and dialog among an interesting group of people.
